Graduate Student Internships 2017

The Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) and York Research are providing opportunities and funding for paid internships for graduate students with a variety of community partners. This summer, students will apply for positions identified by community organizations who have identified research projects for student researchers, (projects beginning May 2017 and running until August 2017).

The internship funding commitment will be shared equally amongst the partner organization, Knowledge Mobilization Unit (KMb) of York Research, and FGS.

Frequently asked Questions (FAQs)

How does the internship affect my funding package?

The internship will be on top of your existing funding package, and thus does not impact your funding package.

I am an international student, am I eligible to apply?

Yes, international students are eligible to apply. Since this is an internship agreement through York University, it is considered on-campus work and international students do not need a work permit.

Students must be registered full-time during the tenure of the internship.

I have a TA and/or a GA position; can I still apply?

While priority will be given to students who do not have a TA/GA position, applications are still accepted from students who hold TA/GA ships.

I have external funding already; can I still apply?

Priority will be given to students who do not already have external funding. This is to help distribute funding amongst all graduate students. We will, however, accept applications from students who receive external funding.

Note: Some external funding bodies may have restrictions that do not allow students to hold internships or other forms of funds. It is your responsibility to ensure that the regulations of your external funder allow you to hold the internship.

I am graduating, am I still eligible?

Students must be registered full-time during the tenure of the internship.

Please note that it is your responsibility to ensure that the internship does not impede your degree program and you are able to commit to the time required.

What hours commitment do I need to make?

Organizations will stipulate on their applications about the expectation but generally it is a 14 or 16 week full-time commitment. We understand that it may be challenging, and we ask you to consider this as a serious commitment and pick an opportunity that enhances and supports the degree that you are pursuing.

What letters of support do I need to submit?

None are required. A cover letter and a resume/CV are necessary.

As this is an internship program, do I need to pay income tax for the internship stipend?

You would have to pay applicable income tax on the stipend.

What do we have to report on in the final report?

In the report you will be asked to outline the work you did during the internship and the time that each stage of the project took. It is not to report how the money was spent. For example, x number of hours on data collection, x number on interviews, major findings, etc. This is to ensure accountability and that the internships supported your proposed project goal and overall graduate education.
